Provided by IMC! Peer Mentor: Cole Greco

College is one of the most crucial times in our young adult lives. Not only do we study hard, but we work hard to build relationships, get involved, and make our impact. Work-life balance as a college student can be a daunting task; however, implementing these simple tips and strategies can make managing your time as a student much easier.

As a student athlete here on campus I know first-hand how difficult time-management can be. I have found that managing work, football, school, and my social life which can be extremely stressful, so I developed a few strategies to aid my success throughout college.

1. Utilize an assignment notebook/planner

This has been a game changer throughout my college experience. The ability to write down assignments, events, and other activities you have planned allows you to understand how much you really need to get done. Also, after completing these activities, the satisfaction of crossing them off is a great feeling. Utilizing an assignment notebook will enable you take your mind off school while still knowing everything you need to get done.

2. Take Breaks

As simple as it sounds, it will save you during long days. Whether it is in between class or during a study session, it is important to give yourself time to cool down. For example, the strategy that works for me is only studying for 2 hours at a time. With this strategy I make sure not to overload myself. It is okay to take some time away from school and decompress. I have found that this often leads to new ideas and an influx of energy.

3. Avoid Perfectionism

This is a key aspect of success in college. I am definitely a victim of always trying to be perfect, so learning how to manage this has been vital to my college experience. Unfortunately, throughout college, you will receive a grade you are unhappy with, or miss an event that you really wanted to attend. It is important fail a couple times and learn from those experiences. Instead of thinking down on yourself for receiving a bad grade, use it to change your study routine.
