Cooking on a Budget!

November 14, 2019 - Matt Shackett

Recently, our team at It Make$ Cents! hosted one of my favorite events every semester, Cooking on a Budget. Partnering up with Chartwells, the Campus Activities Board, and Health & Wellness always seems to be a recipe for success, and our most recent rendition of Cooking on a Budget definitely did not disappoint. This was my third semester participating in the event, and I think it was definitely the best semester yet. The first two times we set up cooking stations in the Entertainment Cafe and then in a room on the third floor of the Student Union, but this time we brought students right to the kitchen and utilized cooking stations within the Kitchen Classics. It was really cool to see the Chefs in their element showing students how to prepare meals.

The recipes that we used were excellent and great for those who want to eat a healthy meal while on a budget! The chefs showed students how to make mac and cheese. I know you’re thinking, ‘Mac and cheese? I make that all the time! What’s the big deal?’ But, this was not your ordinary Kraft out of the box stuff, the chefs let students add a variety of delicious toppings to their dish, including things like chicken, broccoli, and mushrooms. These ingredients paired great with the mac and cheese, but you could add anything you would like to it as well! Some more healthy examples would be turkey bacon or red bell peppers! Students were, also, shown a recipe for overnight oats. Not only did students get to taste a finished batch of overnight oats, but they were given their own to take home for breakfast in the morning. Overnight oats are a great option for breakfast or even an afternoon snack! All you need is some oats and milk, as well as any other toppings you would like to put on it! Some examples are chocolate chips, peanut butter, or fresh fruit! What I enjoyed the most about the set of recipes that students were given is that they were all customizable so everyone could have something they liked. I think that is a really important part of cooking on a budget. Just because you’re making cost effective meals doesn’t mean you should have to sacrifice taste. To go on top of that, just because you’re not out at a restaurant does not mean you can’t have fun and eat something scrumptious, you can definitely have a great time cooking something great at home! Basic meals like mac and cheese and chicken can be mixed with other food items, as mentioned above, to make the meal stand out a little more! You can even look through your fridge and use any leftover fruits or vegetables you have to ensure that you aren’t being wasteful! Make sure to follow these tips to have the best foods while not breaking the bank! Happy cooking!
