How to Grocery Shop on a Budget

Provided by IMC! Peer Mentor: Brooke Voelz

The first rule of grocery shopping is to never go grocery shopping when you are hungry, however I believe that I have broken this rule every single time I go to the store. But to be serious, today I will share some tips for grocery shopping on a budget that work for me and will work for you!

#1: Make a grocery list throughout the week: Do not wait until the night before to make a grocery list because you will forget to add items to your list you do need. And this can be very annoying. Also, taking the time to make a list as will keep you from spending on irrational and unneeded groceries that will rack up a larger bill. Hang your grocery list on the fridge or in a common space where you can add to it as soon as you think of something you need!

#2: Shop around: Check online to see what stores are having sales and deals on certain items on your list. By checking Walmart or Woodman’s online sources before you go, you can save yourself money! Personally, I have found woodman’s and Aldi’s to be the cheapest, but it is personal preference!

#3: Coupon!: Here is your time to be an Extreme Couponer and use coupons to save you some serious dough. Check online at Woodman’s, Festival, or wherever you get your groceries for online coupons, and do not forget to pick up their flyers as soon as you walk in the door! Try to shop or buy brands with coupons to help you save money while still checking off items on your grocery list!

#4: Buy Generic Brands: For everyday use items, try to buy generic brand as it will save you money, and will taste the same as the on-brand. Some examples of generic items could be soups, baking supplies, and dry goods.

#5: Use the UWL Food Pantry!: The food pantry is for any student to utilize and is completely free! Sign up with your name and student id number for free access. Even if you pick up your weekly snacks here, it will save you money you would have spent at the store!

If there is one thing I hope you took away from this post, it is to never go to the grocery store hungry! 😊

Have a great week!

Brooke
