Budgeting for Your Coffee Addiction

By: Maisy Dyhr

Hello, fellow coffee addict, it’s time to get vulnerable. Like many, my days start with a cup of coffee. Typically, the coffee will come from my state-of-the-art Keurig, but on other days I may get swooped into my favorite chain or small businesses. Recently, I have realized that my coffee spending has doubled since this academic school year started. Although this makes sense with my current lack of sleep, temperatures dropping, pumpkin spice consuming my taste buds, and holiday favorites such as peppermint mocha coming in full force, of course, my spending has doubled. But, where do I draw the line? Well, that’s what I am here to help you with. My keyword is budget. Sure, budgeting for small items like coffee seems far-fetched, but it will be a game changer in regard to your spending habits. For me, I currently limit myself to a budget of $20 dollars a month which equivalates to about one coffee bought outside of my home a week. I put myself on a tight budget to better my habits but also not punish myself for buying an item that I love. For the other 6 days of the week, I use my Keurig. I buy k-cups in bulk at my local grocery store. This has been my best financial option in terms of quantity per price. Don’t be overwhelmed by your coffee addiction, it’s normal. But simple budgeting will help your coffee spending habits feel like a breeze.
